As any Gamer knows, the difference between being successful and not being successful is all about focus and being able to focus for sustained periods of time is something that Gamers work on and work consistently to improve. So how is it possible to ignite that focus when you are Gaming.
Well here are some top tips, by no means an exhaustive list, but some points that are well worth giving attention to.
Take a step back and consider what is round about you.
Are you in a separate room to everyone else in your home and if you are, is it free from external noise and interruptions? Do people feel free to walk in and out? It has been shown that when your focus is disturbed, it can take as long as 23 minutes to regain it fully.
A good set of headphones is always a good idea. It helps if your space is free of clutter, a cluttered space can mean a cluttered mind as the saying goes.
It certainly can produce distractions, prompting you to focus on things that are lying around. A clean, tidy, calm space is recommended.
You’ve probably heard of Gaming supplements and might even be wondering if they work.
The notion of Nootropics for cognitive enhancement has been around for centuries, it is not new.
Nootropics for Gamers are commonly offered as a supplement and as for whether they work or not, the answer would be that it depends. It depends very much on the preparation, the type of ingredients, the quality of the ingredients and the dose.
A balance has to be created within the product so that everything works together, too much of the one ingredient can be as problematic as too little, it is the balance that is important.
A quality supplement will support brain function, improve reaction time, motivation, focus and essentially everything that will help a Gamer perform more efficiently. If you are looking for a Nootropic, we recommend a caffeine free preparation.
At God Gamer, we are fortunate to have our own in house Nutritional Therapist. As Gamers ourselves, we know what we want to achieve. We also recognise that our brains do not operate independently and we often need support in other parts of our body too.
Our range of supplements offer a complete support package - you can check out our flagship product, Mind Hack, below:
It goes without saying that if you are comfortable, you will perform better. If you are uncomfortable, you will tend to focus quite a bit on that, moving around, fidgeting in order to gain a comfortable position.
Check your seating and screen position, brightness and resolution and make sure that your hand is comfortable on the mouse and in fact make sure that the equipment you have serves your needs.
Keyboards, mice and screens all come with a choice of features and what suits one person is not going to suit another. Get the best of what you can afford and try the different options out if you can before buying.
So many people think that they can multitask but what they don’t realise is that the brain really does not work that way. When it focuses on one thing, it removes focus from the other task.
That is why you cannot have two people speaking to you at the one time. So, flicking through screens, checking your phone, even between games can remove your focus from where it was and remember, it can take quite a bit of time for it to fully come back.
Even music in the background can provide a distraction, evoke memories and take our focus away from where it should be. So, single task only and try to make sure that you do not bring any worries or problems to your gaming time. Leave them at the door and pick them up on the way out.
It really does pay to learn from others, especially those who are better than you. Study their form and watch how they react to certain situations and take note of the strategies that they use.
Sometimes a simple change that you would not even have thought of can help develop your skills and the more skills you have, the more your confidence, interest and hence focus will increase.
Do not be afraid to play with players who are more skilled than you. It will help you sharpen your mind and focus.
It is recommended that you do whatever you can to tidy up your diet. Sugary foods, drinks, processed foods and alcohol will all serve a detrimental effect on your body.
They will not only encourage your body to gain weight, they will cause internal inflammation which can wreak havoc throughout your system, eventually leading to disease.
Your focus, reaction time and mood are all going to be dependent on what nourishment you give your body and the very best at any sport are very careful with what they feed themselves.
You cannot expect to be able to sit down and have the sharpest focus when you are feeling full, bloated or tired. Some people think that they can overcome their tiredness and sharpen their focus with the use of caffeine but in practice this is a bad idea.
It may make you feel more wide awake but alongside that, it can make you more agitated and jittery resulting in impulsive and quick movements, which is not going to be good for focus or morale.
Unfortunately the only way to go is by adopting a healthy diet as part of your regime. Good quality foods, fruit, vegetables, lean protein and plenty of water to keep your system hydrated.
To be focused, you need to be calm and to be calm you need to address the constant activity and ‘noise’ that is going on inside your head.
There are different techniques to do this and everyone tends to find their own. A quick look on You Tube offers lots of guided meditation practices, binaural beats, yoga and more.
Some people use breathing exercises and some use visualisation techniques. You should try and test the different practices to find out what works best for you. It is important to set aside some time for this each day.
Mornings are probably a good idea, or if you work on a shift pattern, whenever you get up.
Spend 20 minutes on your chosen practice and you will find that it not only sets you up for the day, it also will help to keep you balanced and calm throughout your game.
As well as Gaming being a sedentary sport, there is also the need to consider the possibilities of repetitive strain injury, commonly in the hand, wrist, arm, neck and shoulder area.
As well as normal exercise, whether that be the gym, running or walking etc, it would be good practice to include exercises which focus specifically on target areas.
Everyone is different but when you play, you may notice parts of your body becoming tense or painful, it is those areas that you need to pay particular attention to before a bigger problem surfaces. Strengthening exercises will help your reaction time.
If you are in pain or uncomfortable during your game, this is going to lead to you focusing on your sore hand, painful neck or whatever it is. A healthy programme of exercises will allow you to feel more energised and go a long way to improving mental clarity.
Gamers who are the most focused really enjoy their game and have a real passion for it. Set aside uninterrupted time and practice as much as you can. Remember that the best Gamers have endured failure time on time but have learned to move past that. There is nothing like passion to ignite your focus.
