Caffeine is undoubtedly one of the go to ‘drugs’ that people use for a boost.
Whether it is coffee, an energy drink, chocolate or a tablet, people reach for it throughout the day when they are feeling tired or less alert but is caffeine all that it appears to be or is there a darker more sinister side to it that Gamers should be aware of?
It is no secret that many Gamers use caffeine in the hope that it will boost their game by keeping them more alert and more focused but is it really going to make you that supercharged superpower Gamer or should you really be avoiding it altogether?
Whilst it is clear that a small amount of caffeine can even be beneficial to health, regular, larger amounts are not.
It is far better to work with the body, at the root of the problem, rather than work against it.
It makes much more sense to enhance and stimulate the body’s own natural process, working in the same direction to produce sustained benefit.
Gamers are increasingly turning to Nootropics and other Gaming Supplements.
There are products out there which use natural ingredients and preparations, avoiding caffeine.
You want a product which can provide a sustained benefit, building the body, increasing strength, endurance, focus and clarity. Look for a good quality product which can target not only the brain but the processes which support the brain in its work.
Here at God Gamer, we have professionally prepared preparations, designed by our very own Nutritional Therapist. All of our products use natural ingredients and are naturally caffeine free. As Gamers ourselves, we have high standards! You can check out our flagship product, Mind Hack, below:
Caffeine is a known stimulant for the central nervous system. It essentially changes the way in which your brain and body work by replacing a chemical known as adenosine.
Adenosine and caffeine are very similar in structure, so similar in fact that the body cannot tell them apart. Because of that, caffeine can easily slip into the receptor sites normally used by adenosine and in doing so, forces the adenosine out.
Adenosine does not work on its own, it works as a ‘team’ with other chemicals which have various functions.
Adenosine balances and inhibits, by slowing down and dampening certain processes within the central nervous system, it promotes sleep, it calms, it helps transfer energy, it is one of the messengers in the brain, it regulates the heart rhythm and acts as a natural painkiller in every cell in the human body.
By replacing adenosine with caffeine, the opposite effect is achieved, so, instead of modulating cell activity, caffeine speeds it up and that is why it can produce a wakeful feeling.
Great, so it could improve mood, wakefulness, alertness, so why don’t we just take caffeine all the time then?
So, here’s the problem - much of the time, caffeine does not just gently stimulate, it can, and does routinely overstimulate and when that happens, the problems and negative effects of using the caffeine far outweigh any of its positive effects.
In fact when you start to change the chemical composition of your body, problems can and do occur. The body prefers to choose its own chemicals for the best possible effect!
When the body is overstimulated by caffeine, anxiety develops and that is just not what you want when you are trying to remain calm and focused.
Your nervous system becomes more agitated and your heart rate increases. A number of studies have confirmed its effect on motor skills, so, it is common to be restless, you might feel the need to move maybe by tapping your feet, moving your hands or jerking, which in turn can make you more prone to being impulsive.
Instead of achieving that measured and focused approach, you are finding yourself wanting to make decisions which are driven by impulse and instead of precise, calculated movements, your movements are likely to be clumsy with slow reaction times.
For proper brain functioning, sharpness, alertness and good focus, a good blood supply to the brain is essential, brain scans have consistently confirmed that.
Caffeine in fact does the opposite and it is known to reduce the flow of blood to the brain by constricting the blood vessels.
This will not only show up in a reduction in speed, focus and function but can impact on mood and emotions too.
Caffeine takes around 45 minutes to have its effect and the effect will last for anywhere between 4 and 6 hours.
When the effects wear off, adenosine kicks back in, and that causes a sudden shift in body chemistry which can result in a number of ‘withdrawal’ effects such as a headache, a groggy feeling, mood fluctuations, fatigue, difficulty focusing and concentrating etc.
Some of these effects can continue into the next day, and longer, affecting future games. Focus and play ability is then compromised, the very qualities that as a Gamer you are trying to cultivate.
Many people continue to take caffeine to avoid the withdrawal effects and as they do that, the body produces more of its receptor sites in the hope that adenosine will use them and that leads to the user needing to increase the amount of caffeine needed to have the same effect and so a cycle develops.
A tolerance will naturally come about and it becomes difficult to stop taking caffeine as withdrawal symptoms which affect mood, performance and the physical body become more severe.
Everyone is different and for some people, the effects of continued use of caffeine can promote some very serious effects.
If you are going to use caffeine, the advice would be to use it responsibly and in small amounts, not too much coffee!
That way you can benefit from the positive effects of and avoid the overstimulation and withdrawal effects.
You should not rely on it for enhanced performance and instead use ingredients which can produce a sustained and beneficial effect over the longer term.
